Egyptian stone vessels: the custody split
Status: closed for the first-edition synthesis; live as a future measurement program. This is backend research, not a public wiki page.
The short finding
The stone vessels are real technological evidence. They preserve a mature craft tradition capable of shaping hard stone through controlled rotation, abrasion, boring and long-practiced workshop knowledge. Metrology is improving our view of that tradition. It does not, at present, establish that the most extreme private-object measurements belong to ancient Egypt.
The decisive break in the argument is custody. Excavated and museum-held vessels form one evidentiary population. Private-market vessels attributed by resemblance form another. Joining them produces the appearance of an ancient machine class before the date of the most precise objects has been secured.
The 2025 metrology paper analyzes nineteen Petrie Museum vessels, twenty-five modern machine-made vessels and twenty-four contemporary handmade vessels. It describes thousands of early vessels broadly, hundreds from major sites and more than one thousand catalogued examples—not the stronger circulating denominator of “tens of thousands beneath Djoser.” Its model finds a recognizable museum class and proposes rotational grinding and boring processes. The public Petrie scans are available, while additional scans and the MATLAB code are available only by request. This is a valuable first published model, not the last word: it is a single-author study, its classification depends on chosen circularity/concentricity metrics, and broader feature relations remain open. The privately held “OG Vase” is reported as extraordinarily regular: its project page gives an exterior circularity minimum of 0.0094 mm and median of 0.0162 mm, and reports both structured-light and CT scanning. Those are claims about its present geometry. The same page labels it Early Dynastic but does not provide an excavated chain that establishes that date; its embedded heatmap applications are currently unavailable. Artifact Research Foundation
A derived STL was publicly released for reanalysis, which is meaningful openness. The released mesh nevertheless does not equal the raw structured-light images, complete CT volume, calibration history, processing masks, uncertainty budget or archaeological custody. The famous CAD-pattern analysis is best retained as an exploratory notebook. It used Blender measurements, manual best-fit placement and an openly shared OpenSCAD model. More importantly, its author later rejected the proposed radial-traversal pattern and stated his present view that the object is modern or was reworked. Independent project analyses show why the problem remains interesting. Different metrics and alignment choices can materially change scores; museum and handmade groups overlap under some comparisons, while certain private vessels remain anomalous under others. What survives into the TimeWar thesis
- Ancient Egyptian vessel making was a highly developed technical tradition, not “primitive rubbing.” Rotation, abrasive choice, tool geometry, sequencing and embodied workshop knowledge form a real technology package.
- Technical capacity can be inherited, narrowed, ritualized or redistributed without leaving a modern factory behind. The vessels remain useful evidence for the inheritance model.
- Metrology can expose capabilities that visual typology misses, especially when it studies whole authenticated populations and multiple geometric relationships.
- Private objects may point toward a genuine anomaly, a modern production stream, ancient-object reworking, or a mixture. That fork is itself historically important, but it is not yet an ancient-civilization result.
What does not cross the first-edition gate
- present precision → ancient date;
- private stylistic attribution → excavated provenance;
- one selected vase → population prevalence;
- mathematical fit → encoded ancient unit or intention;
- metrological class → a specific machine;
- failure to make an exact replica → impossibility;
- a private scan programme → a publicly reproducible corpus;
- an anomalous object → found civilization, breakaway continuity, nonhuman manufacture or literal ascension.
The first-edition state is therefore T1 / F0 / K0 / N0 / B0: measurable technological information survives, while the stronger origin and departure lanes remain open hypotheses without a positive crossing here.
Minimal next experiment
Scan a preregistered set of securely excavated hard-stone vessels and matched modern controls using the same instrument and protocol. Publish raw CT/structured-light data, calibration artifacts, masks and code. Measure circularity, concentricity, wall thickness, lug orientation, coaxiality, feature relations and tool traces. Blind the analysts to object class until their outputs are frozen. Replicate complete geometry and finish with separately documented primitive, intermediate and modern processes.
