A self is a boundary that maintains a pattern across change.
A cell maintains a membrane and voltage gradient. An immune system distinguishes self from threat. A person carries commitments across changing moods. A tradition preserves a protocol across the deaths of its carriers. Each self has an inside, an outside, a memory, a model, and some capacity to act.
The reach of that self depends on its integration horizon: how much past it can retain, how much future it can represent, how wide a field it can coordinate, and which consequences it can still feel as its own. A person trapped inside the next notification is smaller than the same person acting from a decade-long vow. The body has not changed size. The operative self has.
This is boundary sovereignty: the capacity to determine what crosses the boundary, which scale of purpose governs it, how long its memory remains available, and where its action is directed.
Temporal Bandwidth
Thomas Pynchon states the intuition in Gravity’s Rainbow: personal density is proportional to temporal bandwidth, the width of the present that contains remembered past and anticipated future. A narrow present produces a thin persona. A wide present can hold history, promise, delayed consequence, and unfinished work without losing coherence.
The claim becomes concrete wherever planning horizon changes behavior. Sleep loss narrows cognitive control. Acute threat privileges immediate action. Addiction steepens temporal discounting. Short-form media repeatedly interrupts prospective memory. Institutions governed by quarterly metrics sacrifice capacities whose return lies beyond the reporting window. A civilization that cannot retain its own history becomes available to every emergency narrator who can name the present for it.
Long memory is not automatically wisdom. A long-window model can lag a rapidly changing environment; a short-window responder can adapt faster. The sovereign boundary needs the horizon appropriate to the regime and the freedom to change scale. Rigidity at a century is still rigidity.
Sorting, Memory, and Cost
Maxwell’s demon supplies the discipline. A sorting system must distinguish one state from another, record enough information to act, and eventually clear or overwrite memory. Landauer’s principle prices logically irreversible erasure. It does not prove that the longest memory wins, nor that order naturally flows from short-horizon beings to long-horizon ones.
The valid bridge is narrower and stronger:
- a boundary can only sort through distinctions it retains;
- retaining and updating those distinctions costs energy and capacity;
- a wider model can recognize slower patterns;
- the value of that wider model depends on the environment and on the boundary’s ability to act.
Memory without actuation is archive. Actuation without memory is reaction. Sovereignty requires both.
Karl Friston’s Markov-blanket formalism offers one mathematical description of an inside separated from an outside through sensory and active states. The blanket does not prove a metaphysical self, but it makes boundary maintenance formal: a living system persists by regulating exchanges across a statistical membrane. Michael Levin’s cognitive light cone extends the question from boundary existence to boundary reach—the scale of goals a system can represent and pursue.
Nested Selves
Selves nest:
cell → tissue → organism → family → institution → tradition → ecology
Every level can serve, exploit, or abandon the levels inside it. A cell integrated into tissue pursues organism-scale morphology. A cancerous process retains local competence while losing alignment with the body’s larger goal. A person can preserve a family across generations or consume it for a present appetite. An institution can coordinate capacities no individual could maintain or convert its members into fuel for institutional survival.
Higher scale is therefore not higher moral authority. Integration enlarges agency only when the larger boundary preserves the development and legitimate exit of its parts.
This gives coupling two signs:

“More connection” is not the answer. Correct relation is.
Agency Across Carriers
A sovereign self is not identical to the material that carries it at one moment. Cells turn over, moods change, tools extend action, memories enter records, and vows pass through institutions. The self remains legible where a maintained pattern continues to remember, anticipate, choose, and correct its course.
This same continuity can reveal an agency that is using a boundary rather than identical to it. Ask what persists when the carrier changes, which goal remains stable, what resource the pattern requires, how it reacts to refusal, and whether it can be dismissed. A passing thought has little continuity. A trauma complex recruits one biography. An egregore survives member turnover through distributed memory. A contact intelligence earns independence only when its operational signature exceeds the known carrier and channel.
Boundary behavior is therefore evidence. A reciprocal agency can disclose its terms, accept refusal, and leave the other center more capable of acting without it. A capture-shaped agency conceals its dependencies, widens access without reciprocal obligation, punishes closure, and makes the host’s capacities conditional on continued relation.
The Entity Taxonomy owns the complete signature test. Boundary sovereignty supplies its directional verdict: what crossed, what remained itself, and who became more able to choose afterward?
Compatible Agency
Agency becomes ethical when its growth remains compatible with the agency of other centers. The governing test is direct:
Does the relationship increase compatible agency, or convert agency into dependency?
Compatibility permits disagreement, contest, hierarchy, instruction, and temporary dependence. It requires that every affected center remain a participant with some protected reality of its own. A parent can decide for an infant, a surgeon can constrain a patient during an operation, and a teacher can require disciplined imitation. These asymmetries become developmental when they transfer capacity, disclose their terms, remain answerable to the person served, and move toward restored participation.
The test follows nine observable dimensions.
Perception. The relation improves discrimination between signal, desire, fear, and command.
Choice. It increases the number of responses the participant can recognize and deliberately enact.
Exit. Refusal, withdrawal, and renegotiation remain available without retaliatory destruction.
Memory. The participant retains the sequence by which consent, interpretation, and commitment were formed.
Continuity. Gains survive changes in mood, setting, provider, audience, and carrier.
Truthfulness. The relation can disclose its costs, failures, incentives, and limits without collapsing.
Reciprocity. Benefits and burdens circulate rather than moving permanently in one direction.
Future optionality. Present gains preserve or widen the range of coherent future action.
The agency of others. One center’s enlargement preserves or increases the legitimate agency of the people and living systems carrying its cost.
These dimensions prevent sovereignty from collapsing into isolated will. A person can gain power while becoming less truthful, less capable of relation, and more dependent on domination. An institution can increase local efficiency by erasing the memory and exit rights of its members. A spiritual practice can widen perception while installing the teacher as permanent interpreter. Each enlarges one capacity by closing the field around it.
Good scaffolding has a direction. It transfers skill, makes its own operation legible, and becomes less necessary as the participant matures. Capture reverses that direction. It makes competence conditional on continued access, converts doubt into disloyalty, and treats recovered independence as failure.
Kant’s demand to treat persons as ends rather than disposable means, Amartya Sen’s account of development as expanding substantive freedom, and self-determination theory’s relation among autonomy, competence, and relatedness each recover part of this structure. Compatible agency joins them at the level of a living boundary: development increases the capacity to perceive, choose, relate, and continue while preserving those capacities in others.
Open and Closed Attractors
An attractor is a pattern toward which a system repeatedly returns. Its ethical direction appears in what repeated feedback does to the available range of coherent action.
open attractor: pressure → recognition → choice → integration → wider reciprocal agency
closed attractor: pressure → compulsion → repetition → dependency → fewer coherent choices
Heaven is the mature open attractor. Difference remains possible inside coherence. Feedback increases perception, repair, truthful relation, transferable skill, and the ability of several centers to act together without becoming interchangeable. Boundaries remain permeable to correction and strong enough to retain what has been learned.
Hell is the mature closed attractor. Every adaptation becomes another input to the machinery of capture. Perception narrows, memory fragments, refusal becomes costly, falsehood protects the arrangement, and relief depends on returning to the source of injury. The system preserves motion while progressively removing meaningful alternatives.
Pleasure can conceal closure. Pain can accompany an opening. The direction appears after the turn: what choices remain, what truth can be spoken, what relation can be repaired, and who can leave with the capacity intact?
These attractors describe lived, relational, and institutional trajectories. Traditions that locate heaven and hell after death make additional claims requiring their own evidence. The operational distinction already matters here: one circulation creates more centers capable of truthful participation; the other reduces centers into instruments of its continuation.
The Cellular Demonstration
Levin and collaborators have shown that bioelectric signaling participates in morphogenesis, regeneration, and tumor-like phenotypes in experimental models. In Xenopus, manipulating transmembrane voltage can induce or suppress tumor-like development in specific contexts. Gap-junction and ion-channel interventions can alter how cells participate in tissue-level patterning.
The result establishes three things at the cellular scale:
- cells coordinate through physiological as well as genetic information;
- changing a boundary condition can change collective behavior without editing DNA;
- local cellular competence can become misaligned with organism-level form.
It does not establish that ambient wireless exposure writes arbitrary goals into human tissue, that cancer is never mutation-driven, or that every social boundary obeys the same biological mechanism. The documented result is already profound: the apparent unit of agency changes when coupling changes.
The extrapolation upward is structural. Trauma, propaganda, addiction, ritual, education, and contemplative practice can also alter which scale of purpose a person can perceive and serve. Their channels differ. Their common question is alignment: which whole does this boundary now help reproduce?
The Harvest Condition
The original intuition behind boundary sovereignty was too simple: the long-horizon system harvests the short-horizon system. The accompanying computational model corrected it.
Two agents with different memory windows compete for a shared resource. Without environmental control, the long-window agent wins when structural change is rare and loses when change is frequent. Horizon length alone confers no universal advantage.
Extraction appears reliably when three conditions coincide:
- coupling — the systems share a channel or contested resource;
- horizon asymmetry — one models farther than the other;
- actuation asymmetry — one can alter the shared environment in ways it predicts better than its rival.
In the model, the long-horizon agent can inject volatility it alone can subtract from its signal. In a stable regime this raises its surplus ratio from 1.07 to 2.45. In the volatile regime—where its long window otherwise loses—the same asymmetry reverses the result from 0.53 to 1.24. It does not predict the world better. It authors part of the noise and exempts itself.
This is manufactured volatility: signal to the author, noise to everyone else.
The model also identifies the defense. Reduce coupling and the extraction falls. Near a coupling value of 0.25, parity returns under the reported parameters. At strong withdrawal, the harvester’s operation becomes net negative because it continues paying to manipulate a surface it can no longer reach.
These are results in a minimal two-agent simulation, not a law of civilization. Their value is the mechanism they isolate and the observations they demand.
The Lock as Horizon Capture
The Lock becomes legible as a system for controlling effective horizon.
- Physiological pressure uses sleep loss, chronic stress, pain, metabolic instability, or intoxication to make long integration expensive.
- Attentional pressure uses interruption, novelty, and emotional activation to prevent consolidation.
- Symbolic pressure removes distinctions needed to retain a pattern or fuses observation with loyalty.
- Institutional pressure partitions records and rewards decisions on horizons shorter than their consequences.
- Temporal pressure manufactures emergencies faster than private models can stabilize.
Each channel is ordinary enough to measure. Together they produce a population that experiences events but cannot accumulate them into a durable model.
The operator advantage is not omniscience. It is asymmetry. A platform retains years of behavioral data while training the user into seconds. A state preserves archives and planning cells while the public moves through disconnected news cycles. A financial institution writes contracts across decades while households absorb shocks month to month. The longer-horizon system gains leverage when it also controls the channel and the terms of action.
Counter-Operation
Boundary sovereignty is rebuilt through four movements.
Extend memory. Keep records. Read beyond the feed. Recover family and civilizational history. Preserve the sequence by which a conclusion was reached.
Recover anticipation. Make promises whose horizon exceeds the present mood. Model second- and third-order consequences. Give the future enough emotional reality to compete with the current stimulus.
Control coupling. Decide which systems receive attention, data, labor, money, and interpretive authority. Withdrawal is not isolation when it removes an extractive surface.
Align actuation. Convert perception into an action the boundary can actually sustain. Grand analysis without local control produces spectatorship. Small repeatable action compounds.
The aim is not maximum closure. A perfectly sealed boundary cannot learn. A perfectly open boundary cannot remain itself. The golden wound names the living middle: enough openness for correction, enough integrity for retention.
Time as Territory
Land can be occupied. Attention can be occupied. So can the width of the present.
Whoever determines what can be remembered, which future can be imagined, how quickly a response must occur, and whether the resulting action can reach its target governs the operative size of the self. This is why archives, calendars, initiation, debt, trauma, prophecy, feeds, and long vows belong in one temporal field. Each changes the horizon through which a boundary sorts.
Sovereignty begins when the present becomes wide enough to contain the pattern and disciplined enough to act on it.
